The New HD PowerPacks

The magical sound of a tube amp on full blast has been the holy grail of guitar tone since Jimi Hendrix lit his Strat on fire at Woodstock. Many products attempt to capture that iconic tone at lower volumes, but few deliver the real thing—and some (like reactive load boxes) can burn out your power tubes in no time.

With Neutron Audio PowerPacks, we’ve created authentic profiles of several tube power sections that allow you to bring back that loud amp sound without destroying your tubes or your ears. But it doesn’t stop there—combine these power amp profiles with our included preamp and speaker profiles, and you’ll be crafting completely new tones.

Power Amp Profiles and Why You Need Them

Guitar amplifiers consist of two key sections: the preamp, which shapes the tone, and the power amp, which adds the compression and saturation that make amps sound magical. In vintage amps, the power amp stage is responsible for much of the iconic tone, but achieving this often requires dangerously loud volumes. Modern amps focus more on the preamp to work at quieter levels, losing some of that magic. With Neutron PowerPacks, you can now experience the legendary "loud amp" sound without the ear-splitting volume, giving you the rich, authentic tone of a cranked amp at any level, without damaging your tubes or disturbing the neighbours.

Not All Amp Modeling Algorithms are Equal

In many digital amp modeling products (especially those on the lower end of the market), the unique qualities of the power amp’s sound aren’t fully or faithfully captured. The reason lies in the complexity of the power amp itself, which involves factors like:

  • Compression and even-order harmonic saturation

  • Presence control through a negative feedback loop

  • Effects of voltage delivery, sag, and bias

Capturing these qualities is as challenging as profiling a preamp circuit with multiple gain stages. Due to this complexity, the power section in digital models is sometimes reduced to a basic algorithm or blended with the rest of the amp’s sound, losing the independent, non-linear characteristics of the power stage.

For modern high-gain amplifiers, which rely heavily on the preamp, this may not affect the sound significantly. However, with vintage amps, the power stage plays a crucial role in shaping the overall tone, particularly at high volumes. Profiling these amps accurately requires capturing that distinctive power stage behavior, especially at the “edge of breakup” and lower gain settings.

As fewer players experience the “loud amp sound” firsthand, digital modeling products have generally focused less on replicating power amp dynamics. This is why some simulations handle high-gain sounds well but struggle with capturing the nuanced character of low to medium gain settings, where the power amp’s non-linear behavior shines.

Current Power Stage Line up : History!

6L6 Power Tube

History:
The 6L6 was indeed introduced by RCA in the 1930s and became one of the first widely used power tubes for amplifiers. Known for its clean, clear, and powerful sound, the 6L6 is excellent for handling high wattage. Its tone is generally smooth and balanced, with strong bass response and a clear top end, making it ideal for clean tones but also highly responsive in overdrive.

Famous Amps:
The 6L6 is famously used in Fender amps like the Twin Reverb, Super Reverb, and Bassman, providing a distinctive clean sound with powerful low-end. Mesa/Boogie amps also utilize 6L6s for their high headroom and dynamic overdrive capability.

6V6 Power Tube

History:
The 6V6 was also developed in the 1930s and has become known for its warm, midrange-rich tones. It is particularly valued for its smooth breakup at lower wattages, making it a favorite for players who prefer natural, tube-driven overdrive without excessive volume.

Famous Amps:
The 6V6 is indeed iconic in Fender amps like the Deluxe Reverb and Champ. It is also popular in boutique amps where its vintage character and smooth, musical breakup are desired at lower power levels.

EL34 Power Tube

History:
The EL34 was created by Mullard in the early 1950s and became a foundational tube for British rock music. It is known for its punchy midrange, aggressive breakup, and higher output compared to its American counterparts, making it a favorite for higher-gain applications and British-style crunch.

Famous Amps:
EL34 tubes are central to Marshall amps like the Plexi and JCM800, where they contribute to the signature British sound with punchy mids and detailed highs. They’re also used in amps from Orange and Laney, contributing to the characteristic "British" rock tone.

EL84 Power Tube

History:
The EL84 emerged as a lower-wattage alternative in the 1950s and quickly became popular in British amps for its distinctive chime, bright response, and musical breakup. Known for delivering a mix of warmth and clarity, EL84s are highly responsive and provide organic, touch-sensitive overdrive.

Famous Amps:
EL84 tubes are central to the classic Vox AC15 and AC30 amps, where they contribute to the characteristic "jangle" and clarity, especially well-suited for clean and slightly overdriven tones. They’re also used in Matchless and Dr. Z amps, lending versatility and brightness for rock and blues.

Neutron Power Packs

EL34 Demo Plus Pre speaker.png

Thanks to the amazing capabilities of Neural Amp Modeller, it is now possible to faithfully capture the behaviour of a valve power stage when profiled correctly. This process will produce a profile that can be loaded into a plugin instance and used as a proxy for the real thing, allowing you to still use your favourite real valve preamp (or the preamp section off your valve amplifier), preamp pedal or preamp profile (more on this later). In a lot of cases, this will even allow you to leave your valve amp on standby saving the life of those precious power valves in the process! **a note here to say that you don't want to be using profiles or models of amps containing the power section already, the ideal source sound should be a preamp only. If your amplifier has an effects loop send, this is the ideal signal to use**

So, With all of this in mind, and if you have made it to this point, well done! We can now answer the question: Why do we want power amp profiles?

1

Real Gear Normal
Volumes

1: So we can use our “real” gear at normal volume levels and still enjoy the amazing sound of high volume power valves. This has great utility for practice, recording and live use. Finally, convenience does not mean you have to compromise on your guitar sound. Compared to the alternative of running your amplifier into a reactive load on full blast all the time (particularly in light of the current valve shortages) this is a much more economical solution, particularly in the case of an amplifier that can use its preamp section while on standby.

2

Divided - Improved Accuracy

2: To divide the process of modeling the sound into the 2 very separate systems present in a real valve amplifier, much more faithfully reproducing each one. Simply put, we can double the accuracy potential by splitting the process into 2 parts. NAM does an amazing job with the profiling of complex amplifier setups, so this is by no means an absolute necessity in the case of that specific plugin, but it certainly can't hurt when ultimate accuracy and control are your no.1 goal. If you are NOT using NAM for other parts of your sound, having the faithfully reproduced power stage can certainly “upgrade” your end 5 result. This could be particularly valuable when used with, for example, one of the new wave of preamp pedals that are currently so popular.

3

New Amps Designed in Seconds

3: Unlocking new tonal possibilities by combining pre and power amp sections that normally would not be found in production amps. A Fender Tweed deluxe preamp into an EL34 power stage? Let your imagination run wild! Imagine the tonal possibilities: combining a Vox AC30 preamp with 6L6 tubes for rich mid-range chime, or pairing a Marshall Plexi preamp with KT88 tubes for bold headroom and rock-ready aggression.. These combinations unlock endless textures and flexibility for tone enthusiasts.
